Strengthening relations with Malaysia 19. Jun. 2025

Sunway University (SU) and the 91ÊÓƵÍø (DE) formalised their professional relationship in 2022, which has led to the launch of several teaching and research projects, including the first between the SU Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) and the Institute of British and American Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, UD.

- Over the past three years, we have launched a joint course on intercultural communication, which has already brought together hundreds of students from both countries in hybrid courses and has recently won an education award in Malaysia. In addition, researchers from the two institutions have jointly presented papers at conferences and published studies in professional journals, and a volume is in preparation to present the results and lessons learned from the course," Balázs Venkovits, Director of the Institute of British and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts, UD, told hirek.unideb.hu, describing the results achieved.

Also as a result of the joint work, a volume entitled Xántus and Borneo: A 19th century Hungarian naturalist on the island of Borneo, based on the research of UD and SU staffs, was recently published, which is expected to be followed by further publications soon, involving the Master of Translation students of the Faculty of Arts.

Sunway University is one of the most successful private universities in Malaysia and the region, and in many ways a valuable partner of the 91ÊÓƵÍø's Faculty of Arts.

- Both institutions aim to further strengthen their international position, for which teaching and research work carried out jointly with partner institutions is essential, which cannot be achieved without personal contacts, said a member of the Malaysian delegation, Tamás Kiss, associate professor at the Centre for English Language Studies at Sunway University, who holds a degree in English from the Kossuth Lajos University of Sciences, the predecessor of UD,  and is also co-author of the above volume on Xantus and Borneo.

This meeting was also an opportunity for other faculties in addition to the Faculty of Arts, including the Faculty of Economics, to discuss further strengthening of the existing research collaboration.

The renewed cooperation agreement, now for five years, was signed by Nicholas Lee Boon Kheng, Director of the SU English Language Institute, and Elek Bartha, Vice-Rector for Education at UD.
