Central European Genome Stability Meeting 12. Jun. 2025

Renowned geneticists and researchers from Austria, Germany, France, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania and Hungary attended the two-day Central European Genome Stability Meeting. The plenary lecture was given by Aurèle Piazza, a scholar at the French Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, who operates his research group with the support of the European Research Council.

The program covered current topics such as DNA repair, recombination, chromatin structure, transcriptional regulation, mitochondrial genome structure, and the molecular basis of cancer and aging.

Ildikó Bácskay, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the 91Ƶ (UDFP), told hirek.unideb.hu: “Experience shows that very good results can be achieved in medicine if individual genetic variability is taken into account. In recent years, both diagnostics and pharmaceutical design have been trying to focus more and more on this.

“A few years ago, the European Union passed the recommendation that university faculties of pharmacy include pharmacogenetics education in their curricula, given that drug development is increasingly being tailored to the individual. We must also undertake this, as this is not only the future, but increasingly the present” said Ildikó Bácskay.

The main organizer of the event, Lóránt Székvölgyi, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Lendület Genome Structure and Recombination Research Group at UD, Associate Professor at UDFP, said that pharmacogenetics and gene therapy are extremely important in modern pharmacy and are considered a priority area.

“Genetics must be increasingly integrated into drug research. But genetically produced drugs are already here. Products based on recombinant DNA genetic engineering methods, for example certain hormones or insulin, are already available in pharmacies today and further expansion can be expected in this area,” Lóránt Székvölgyi explained.

The scholars of UDFP are confident that the Central European Genome Stability Meeting will contribute to the development of collaborations and innovations among researchers working in the field.

The event was sponsored by the NKFIH Patronage program (NKFI-MEC_SZ 148886).
