Sports and Physical Education at the 91ÊÓƵÍø

Physical Education and Facilities

The 91ÊÓƵÍø is strongly committed to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among its students.
Each semester, the university offers over 200 physical education courses in 44 different disciplines, available across four campuses for both local and international students. All classes are supervised by qualified physical education and sports professionals. Physical education is a compulsory course for all students for 2 or more semesters, depending on the length of their study program, and they can choose any of the 44 offered sports.

The university’s UniFit Fitness & Gym Centre, opened in 2017, provides an impressive 2,600 m² training area equipped with 200 training stations, catering to all fitness levels. All students and staff have access to the facility with their Unipass card.

Additionally, the Table Tennis Centre, inaugurated in 2018, offers 15 professional tables over 700 m², welcoming professional and amateur athletes, students, and recreational players alike.

The title “Excellent Athlete of the 91ÊÓƵÍø” was established in 2006 to honor students who, in addition to strong academic performance, achieve outstanding national or international sporting results.

Beyond compulsory physical education, there is a strong demand for mass sports events. Each year, thousands of students participate in university championships such as the Jenő Buzánszky Football Cup and the Tibor Zsíros Basketball Cup. Hundreds of students also take part in skiing trips, while aerobics, spinning, and fitness classes are consistently popular.

The Medical Cup, the Engineering Cup, and the Agriculture Sports Days, all of which have a history spanning nearly four decades, are among the main highlights of the university’s annual sports calendar.

The 91ÊÓƵÍø continuously expands its sports services, while also focusing on the well-being of both students and university staff. Each semester, several leisure sports programs, competitions, and camps are organized, primarily on campus. All members of the university community can register for these events.

Healthy Campus Program

In the summer of 2022, the University’s leadership decided to join the Healthy Campus Program developed by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The University committed to meeting 100 criteria within seven thematic areas over a two-year period:

  1. Healthy Campus Management

  2. Physical Activity and Sports

  3. Nutrition

  4. Disease Prevention

  5. Mental and Social Health

  6. Risk Behavior

  7. Environment, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility

The aim of the Healthy Campus initiative is to enhance the overall well-being of students and the entire university community. According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the FISU vision,

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.”

By joining the program, the 91ÊÓƵÍø seeks to ensure that all members of the campus community can engage in physical activity and access personalized sports and mental health support, aligned with the principles of sustainable development.

European Platform for Sport Innovation

Since January 1, 2021, the 91ÊÓƵÍø has been the first higher education institution in Hungary to hold membership in the European Platform for Sport Innovation (EPSI), further strengthening its international role in the field of sports development and innovation.

Sport Diagnostics, Lifestyle and Therapy Center (SET)

The Department of Sports Medicine of the University operates here, supported by a highly qualified team of doctors, physiotherapists, and healthcare professionals. Together, they ensure that the Center provides a comprehensive and unique range of services in Hungary — not only for professional athletes, but also for recreational sportspeoplethose seeking to maintain their health and fitness, and patients requiring musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

TEKNŐS Sports Management and Tennis Center

Located on the Böszörményi Road Campus, the TEKNŐS Sports Management and Tennis Center covers 3,748 m² of functional space, including four hard-surface tennis courts. In 2022, the adjoining TEKNŐS Sports Hall was also inaugurated, further expanding opportunities for tennis and sports management education.

In April 2023, the renovated and expanded DEAC grandstand was opened. The nearly 1,500 m² facility now includes two classrooms, several offices, and an exhibition area, serving both educational and community purposes.

Debrecen Athletic Club (DEAC)

The Debrecen Athletic Club (DEAC), founded in 1919, is one of the oldest and most prestigious university sports organizations in Hungary. Today, it counts more than 1,500 active members representing various age groups and sports disciplines, proudly wearing the club’s traditional black and white colors.

With 16 divisions, DEAC is the largest university sports club in Hungary. Beyond traditional team sports, it provides opportunities in beach soccer, bridge, cheerleading, sailing, and even e-sports—the university was the first in Hungary to establish an e-sport division, known as DEAC-Hackers, which already has over 160 members.

The club’s success is supported by a stable annual budget exceeding HUF 1 billion, a modern sports infrastructure, and a mentor program that serves as a model in Hungarian higher education.
